How to choose an orthopedic mat?

November 2, 2023
Many factors influence the choice of an orthopedic mat. These are motor skills, diagnosis, weight, or number of mat users and last but not least how much you can invest in mats.

An important aspect is the variety of surfaces. Hard, soft, cold, warm, spiny, soft, straight or protruding. Therefore, we do not recommend purchasing only one or two pieces but one of the basic sets, which you will later supplement at your discretion and according to the abovementioned factors.

We also do not recommend choosing according to the colours, where the assembled set will fit perfectly into your interior, but orthopedically speaking, it may be completely inappropriate. On the contrary, we strive for the greatest possible combination of colours, surfaces, and hardnesses for maximum functionality and maximum fun in children's play. Play with them ‚the stork lost his cap', twister, or scotch hop. Children learn colours, numbers, foreign languages, right and left-hand recognition, and reaction speed, and at the same time, they exercise and strengthen the whole body.

Motor skills

A different type of mat is suitable for an infant, another for a beginning, and another for an advanced walker.

Infant

A soft mat without sharp 3D types is suitable for infants. For babies, the mat motivates tummy time and develops their tactile receptors. In older infants, it helps them to climb properly and strengthens their back, shoulder, and neck muscles. The child rolls on it and gently massages the whole body, which motivates them to move further and progress. By the time the infant gets on all fours, the MUFFIK anti-slippery mat helps to counteract the "slippery mat syndrome", where the baby slides on the mat rather than moves on all fours.

Beginning walkers

For kids that begin to walk, the function of orthopedic mats is crucial. Already, the first contact of the foot with the mat forms your child's arch. This will affect their entire physiological development. The variety of surfaces on which they walk is most important for proper arch formation and strengthening of the entire muscle tone of the lower limbs and core. Hard, soft, cold, warm, spiny, soft, straight or protruding.

Older children already need bigger obstacles in the form of 3D-type mats, which will train their feet and strengthen their ankles, knees, and the whole core.

Adults

MUFFIK orthopedic mats are suitable not only for children but also for adults. There are a large number of points on the foot that correspond to different organs and parts of the body. By stimulating them, we can improve the metabolism, internal organs, and digestion and eliminate fatigue or insomnia. Choose hard types of mats to stimulate these points and soft ones to relax them.

It relieves swollen and tired feet during pregnancy and exercises the very stressed foot arch. In this case, choose a variety of hardnesses, but avoid protruding 3D balance types that could cause you to trip due to the changed center of gravity.

Seniors

In seniors, it is very important for the overall blood circulation of the limbs to prevent cardiovascular diseases. It is also important to improve the reading of different terrains and prevent trips and falls. In this case, we reach for a variety of soft and hard mats. Here, however, we avoid 3D types of mats that a senior might trip over.

Diagnosis

The patient's diagnosis can also influence the choice of mats. Whether it is a collapsed arch, knock ankles and knees, or an overall weakened core.

Flat feet

Do you suffer from knee or hip pain? Do you often have headaches or neck pain? Flat feet may be to blame!

People with flat feet have either a very low or no arch, which means that one or both feet may be in full contact with the ground. Flat foot is the most common "foot" diagnosis in adults and children and affects distant body parts. Many factors are involved in the formation of the arch. Already, the first contact of the foot with the mat forms your child's arch. This will affect their entire physiological development. The most important thing for the correct arch formation is the variety of surfaces. MUFFIK orthopedic mats are designed to stimulate the feet and act not only as a prevention of flat feet but also have great success in alleviating and eliminating problems that have already shown up.

Flat feet

Knock knees - Curved C-shape foot

Curved C-shape foot is currently the most common and most underestimated position of a child's foot. A seemingly innocuous position is usually at the beginning of a whole chain of problems. Incorrect positioning of the heel bone leads to uneven loading, shear, and frictional forces are applied to the arch, and the foot is deflected inwards and deformed. The result is acute congestion of joints, muscles, and tendons. Valgus ankles are not just a foot problem but a whole-body problem. That's why it's important to include MUFFIK orthotic mats to help strengthen the ankles and activate the deep stabilization system, trunk muscles, and proper alignment of the lower limbs.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are enlarged dark purple or blue veins protruding above the skin surface. Most often, they appear on the lower limbs, which bear the whole body's weight. For the prevention and support of treating varicose veins, reach for MUFFIK orthopedic mats. Thanks to them, you stimulate the lower limb area and can achieve improved blood flow, relieving the enlarged veins. Walking on orthopedic mats reduces the clotting and viscosity of red blood cells, which are the main factors of cardiovascular disease. It also strengthens the calf muscles and the entire venous muscle pump that returns blood back to the heart. It is therefore an excellent prevention of varicose veins.

Amount invested

Above we have advised you how many mats it is suitable to buy. It's only a recommendation, and we know that another big factor in the selection is the price of the mats. Therefore, if you don't want to or can't invest a lot of money in the mats, buy them one by one, get a gift for your birthday or Christmas and gradually expand your mat sidewalk. Because even two or three mats are better for your children's development than nothing.
